“The scientific worker seizes upon the inexplicable phenomenon as he would upon a suddenly discovered treasure. The more unexplainable and mysterious it is, the more insight it will yield when eventually explained”

J.B. Rhine (1948, p.14)

Our history

Although Liverpool Hope University has its origins in the late 19th century, it is one of the “newer” universities in the UK. The motto of the university includes a dedication to educate the whole person in body, mind and spirit and as such, this is the perfect home for a research group in parapsychology which addresses the links between all three. The parapsychology group here was an indirect result of Professor Bob Morris’s legacy of the Koestler chair of Parapsychology (Arthur Koestler left a bequest to fund a Professorial Chair at a UK university – this was housed at Edinburgh University as the late philosopher and parapsychologist John Beloff was already working there). Liverpool Hope has one of Professor Morris’s academic sons and two academic grandchildren counted among its members.
